چکیده

A novel method for mass measurements of short-lived exotic nuclides is presented. Exotic nuclides were produced and separated in flight at relativistic energies with the fragment separator (FRS) and were injected into the experimental storage ring (ESR). Operating the ESR in the isochronous mode we performed mass measurements of neutron deficient fragments of 84Kr with half-lives larger than 50 ms. However, this experimental technique is applicable in a half-life range down to a few μs. A mass resolving power of 110000 (FWHM) has been achieved. Results are presented for the masses of 68As, 70,71Se and 73Br.

The Isochronous Mode for Mass Measurements in the CR Storage Ring

Exotic nuclei will be produced and separated in flight with the Super-FRS [1] at FAIR. The separated fragments will be injected and stored in the 13 Tm Collector Ring (CR) [2]. It will be used in the isochronous mode as a timeof-flight (TOF) spectrometer for short-lived exotic nuclides (T1/2 > 20μs), a method which has been developed at the ESR [3]. The mass-to-charge ratio m/q of the stored io...

Improved Isochronous Mode of the ESR

In the isochronous ion-optical mode of a storage ring the revolution time of circulating ions is independent of their velocity, and depends on their mass-over-charge ratio only. This mode is the basis for the Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS). This experimental technique for direct mass measurements of a large variety of short-lived exotic nuclei has been developed at the FRS-ESR facility at ...

Rate Acceptance and Timing Performance of a Time-of-Flight Detector for Isochronous Mass Measurements in the CR

Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) in the ESR has successfully applied recently [1]. At FAIR, IMS will be performed in the Collector Ring (CR) in combination with the Super-FRS and thus substantially extend the reach of mass measurements to more exotic ions. In IMS the masses of the nuclei are directly determined from the revolution frequencies measured by a microchannel plate (MCP) time-of-fl...

Ion-Optical Matching of the FRS-ESR in the Isochronous Mode

Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) is an experimental technique for direct measurements of short-lived exotic nuclei which has been developed at the FRS-ESR facility at GSI [1]. A bottleneck for the present IMS experiments is the low transmission in the injection channel of the ESR [2]. Further losses occur due to possible an ionoptical mismatch between the FRS [3] and the ESR. Here the result...

Mass and lifetime measurements of exotic nuclei in storage rings.

Mass and lifetime measurements lead to the discovery and understanding of basic properties of matter. The isotopic nature of the chemical elements, nuclear binding, and the location and strength of nuclear shells are the most outstanding examples leading to the development of the first nuclear models. More recent are the discoveries of new structures of nuclides far from the valley of stability...
